Bonjou. This is Donna, the American nurse, writing to you again. We just had the opportunity to visit the orphanage run by Sister Inez. What an amazing group of young people she has there, approximately 77 kids from three years old to 17 years old. http://vimeo.com/10814755 They all have jubilant smiles and outreached hands. Every time we come, we are welcomed with songs, dancing and contagious laughter. What a treat it was this week when we arrived. Rather than stopping at the steps to welcome us, they ran down directly into our arms. I have only been to this orphanage three times, but any onlooker would have thought we were family. There are a couple of teenage girls who completely stole my heart. These young women are bright and articulate with such positive futures. Sister Inez’s goal is to train them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord until they are old enough to be on their own, which is generally around twenty five years old. I do count it such a privilege to pour out Christ’s love on these visits. This week we taught hand washing using an “old fashioned” pump at their well. We taught the teenage girls, who help mother the little ones, so they could then pass the teaching on. We also handed out sulfur soap which helps cut down on the incidences of skin rash. We had fun, and they learned very quickly. We are looking forward to teaching them more while building relationships that will change all our lives for eternity.
Until next time
