Hi Loved Ones,
This last weekend was especially difficult for me. After the trip to Jeremie, a kind of deep trouble settled over me, borne out of the compassionate heart that God gives in situations like these. Sometimes, I struggle with the Lord as to whether or not it’s really necessary to do all this. It hurts, and I want to be in the comfort of my own little world. I know you’ve all experienced this at one time or another, when God has asked you to do something you feel ill-equipped to do. I was just reading about Gideon this morning. Gideon wondered where all the miracles were and why the Lord had forsaken the people. God answered him and said, “Go in this might of yours, and you shall save Israel from the hand of the Midianites. Have I not sent you?” But Gideon replied that his clan was the weakest, and he was the least in his father’s house. The Lord said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat the Midianites as one man.”
The Lord is so good to give us His word, and to use people just like us, weak and feeble in our own sight, but mighty because of His strength and power in us.
It’s with this attitude that we begin to work with the Haitian churches to raise the standards of Foursquare orphanages throughout the country.
While I was in Jeremie, I sat down with Pastor Cassamejor and Pastor Guy with the express purpose of creating a budget of everything they spend at the orphanage and their daily needs. Another goal was to come up with a number for what it cost for each child’s physical needs to be met. Here is the breakdown of what we came up with. There are 50 people living at the orphanage: 46 children and 4 adults. They also need 2 more workers to help. They had to lay them off recently for money reasons. This is per month.
Outside school $100
This comes to $2,640 a month. Of course, they have never operated on this budget. This is based on what their needs are. When the money is not there, they simply do without. For example, Pastor Cassamejor explained that he needs to purchase something like insurance, where he pays a fee of $400 a month, and this keeps a doctor and nurse on a retainer, so that when a child is sick, they treat the child immediately. This is a dream for him right now.
This number breaks down to $52.80 for each child and adult in the orphanage.
We’d love to see churches adopt orphanages by helping to support them financially. The Haiti Foursquare Church is in the initial phase of starting another orphanage in Port au Prince and another after the rebuilding of the national church. Please pray about what you can do as an individual and as a church.
A new website is coming soon, and information about how to give will be on that site. We will also have pictures of all the children in the next few days, we hope. All donations can be sent to FMI and designated for orphanages in Haiti.
Serving Christ with you,
