Ever have one of those chance encounters that change your whole world around and make you wonder if maybe someone else was actually in charge of your days?
About a month ago I went out for breakfast with some visitors from the UK to Maison Handel, a cafe near our house. It was the first time we’d been to this place since arriving in Haiti 3 months previously. We are both ordained Elim Pastors and had come as Elim Missionaries to Haiti to work with an orphanage in Port-au-Prince. Unfortunately, as is often the case, our expectations and theirs were somewhat different and before long our relationship broke down. So for some weeks we had been waiting on direction from God, trying doors where ever we saw them, waiting for the right opportunity for us to be able to serve.
Back to the cafe, as we parked our car we noticed a Foursquare vehicle which interested us as the church we belong to is the Elim Foursquare Gospel Alliance, and coming out the cafe as we entered was John Booker! Our guest, who will talk to anyone, struck up a conversation. We introduced ourselves and explained our situation and the rest is what we hope will become a very long and fruitful history.
So who are we?
Jackie Griffiths is going to be working with John in setting up a Bible Institute to train up Pastors and leaders. Having worked at Elim’s Training Center in the UK for 24 years she has a lot of experience in this. Jackie is also recently returned from 3 years working as an Elim Missionary in Malawi where she was involved in setting up and teaching at Elim’s new Bible College in Blantyre.
I’m Becky Haldane and at the moment I’m concentrating on the communications aspect of the work here and helping out where ever I can. I’ve been an Associate Elim Pastor for 8 years in the UK and so my background is in being generally helpful! We are also working with Samaritan’s Purse teaching the Bible Curriculum to the teachers of a Women’s Programme.
This feels like a great fit for us here. We are really enjoying getting to know the folks and finding out more about all the amazing things they are doing. We have three years in Haiti and we are hoping that we will be able to be a blessing to the Foursquare Church and be able to be a part of the fantastic things that God is doing in this nation.
